Saint Francis of Assisi (1181-1226), patron of Italy, animals, and ecology, embraced poverty in order to give everything to Jesus. Determined to live a Gospel life, he found perfect joy through great suffering, humiliation, the loss of his family and friends — but also found himself repaid a hundredfold with a new family in his Franciscan order, those who saw his sanctity and responded with love.
